November 15 (belated): Things I Wish I Was Better At

In case you guys haven’t heard, I am no savant. I am no genius. I really just am not great at a pretty decent amount of things. Now before you get all, “Ashley, don’t be so hard on yourself.” I am not being a Debbie Downer here. Just being honest. I have my faults just like everyone else! There are things I am halfway decent at and there are things I am not. It happens. Welcome to life!

Things I Wish I Was Better At:

~ Eating healthy. I am terrible at eating healthy. I am currently sitting here eating Moose Munch which is caramel corn and chocolate cover caramel corn mixed together. I love me some chocolate and I love me some caramel. I have a major sweet tooth which I try to subdue with berries or other fruit as often as I can but honestly, I just love sweets! I also love salt. Lots and lots of it! I have gotten better about not eating as much but I still just love it!

~ Working out. Or even just being more active. I would much rather just sit on the couch and watch Gilmore Girls while eating Ice Cream. You feel me? Why can’t that be exercising? Why can’t you burn more calories reaching for the remote? I mean for real, I just think we should work on that.

~ Cleaning the house. I am not bad at picking things up, such as laundry to put in the hamper. But honestly, I am terrible at vacuuming and dusting and mopping. I do not enjoy it so I avoid it as long as possible. Being married has made me try a little harder but TJ doesn’t mind so oftentimes he will get to it before I do.

~ Cooking. My food doesn’t taste terrible. I mean some recipes have just not worked out, but the majority has been relatively delicious. I mean I am terrible at mustering up the energy to make food. (Remember the couch scenario from above?) I just do not want to make food sometimes! I would much rather sit on my bum than stand in the kitchen and prepare a meal after working all day.

What do you wish you were better at?

See ya!

November 14 (belated): Why You Should Keep Lists

It is very hard for me to remember things. I get so scatter brained sometimes. Lists are wonderful! It helps keep me on track! It helps me focus on getting done what I need to get done and not lose focus or get sidetracked. I love them!

Why You Should Keep Lists

~ They help you stay focused! They give you something tangible to look at instead of a million different things pulling at you at any given time.

~ You get to mark them off! Growing up, my mom gave us chore charts to do. We got to mark them off with stickers when we were done with the chore. Maybe that is where this all started, I don’t know. All I know is I get a little thrill out of marking things off when I am done with them. I don’t use stickers any more. However, I do often times use highlights or sharpies. I love the bright colors! They are fun and more exciting that just marking them out with a plain black marker or pen.

~ It gets things out of your head. When I write things down, it is kind of a clearing of space in my brain. It isn’t bothering me any more. It isn’t constantly nagging. I may not have gotten it done yet but at least is on the list and it will get done. I won’t forget about it. I will mark it off. It is kind of a relief knowing that it isn’t sitting there waiting in my brain, knowing I will forget about it.

~They help you achieve your goals! Big goals have to be broken down into one step at a time. If you write down those little steps on your to-do list, you are that much closer to getting your big goal done! It is much less overwhelming and you can actually achieve what you were hoping to achieve.

I keep this notebook pretty handy all the time. It has my to-do list, most of the time my grocery list, my Christmas list, you name it it is probably in there. I love it! It really helps my brain not be so overwhelmed.

You should keep lists too! They are fun!

See ya!

Thoughts for the Day

I had my morning devos this morning. I am so thankful that that is becoming more of a normal thing again. Having a cup of coffee and a quiet morning time in The Word is my favorite way to start the day. It really puts me at peace and centered for the rest of the day. I realize on the days I have spent time in the morning I am less critical and less stressed out at work or just in general. Whereas the days that I have not spent time in the morning, I am more critical of people around me and more on edge. So, getting that time is so necessary. This morning I was reading in my devotional book and came across this quote.

How you spend your time is more important than how you spend your money. Money mistakes can be corrected but time is gone forever.

David B. Norris

This was something I really started realizing this year. I was more focused on making money to pay off debt or what have you and not focusing on how I was spending my time. My relationships were not wonderful and my relationship with the Lord was definitely not great. I think that played a huge part in why I made resolutions this year. I want to make sure I am focusing on the right things in life. There is more to life than work and money.

I have still been keeping up with my de-cluttering in February. I went through my shirts which I realized I have a lot of. I got rid of a bunch and then started a “second chance pile” of shirts I had worn but it had been a while so I was willing to give them another chance. So far, 2 out of 3 have made it back into the drawer. I actually looked really good in those two lol! I have gotten some stuff out of my closet and my pantry and bedroom in general. I started tackling the mend pile next to my bed. So, it is going slowly but surely.

See ya!

The Month of February Has Begun

I can’t believe that the shortest month of the year has already started AND that we are already four days into it!!! How crazy is that?! I feel like sometimes life just goes by so quickly. It was two months ago that I said I was going to try and take the month of December a little slower and enjoy the holidays. We all know how that turned out. Although life is going by super quick as it usually does, I have been taking time to enjoy things over the past month or so. After reading The Happiness Project (I know, I know I really should stop talking about it. ) I really wanted to change things to enjoy life a little more. Some small, some daily, some a little more daring, but mostly just being able to say no.

I realized I was saying yes to things that I did not particularly enjoy or things that really did me no good. In January, our membership to the rock climbing gym expired. We decided to let it expire. We did not want to renew because we realized we weren’t using it. At first, we were both really torn. We felt like we should renew but we did not really want to. After it expired, we had a little money to ski. That monthly membership fee was no longer coming out and that freed up a little bit of play money. Then we found out we had free skiing at a mountain not too far. Oh man, we have gone skiing at least once a week for the past month. Amazing! It was such a great decision. Not only am I happier but I am getting out more and being way more active than I was with the gym membership. So that being sad, we will be social rock climbers but it is not something that we are desperately pushing for. I said no to something that was just nagging at my brain and said yes to my favorite activity ever! So much happier!

I also started saying no to so many sweets and sodas. I love soda. It really is a weakness for me. One of the resolutions I made this year was to avoid soda 3 times a week. I thought to myself, this should be a piece of cake. No way. I did not realize how much I love soda until I started cutting it out of my diet. This has been the hardest resolution for me to keep. There have been times when all I want is to drink a soda! But I am in week 4 of my resolutions and so far so good! I have managed to avoid soda twice this week so only one more day and its only Tuesday! I know it may not seem like a lofty goal but I find it better to start small and incorporate it into life that try and go cold turkey because then I just get frustrated.

Another thing that I gleaned from the book that shall not be named is she did resolutions each month. She focused on an area each month and worked on it. I have decided to attempt that for February as least. I don’t know if it will continue into the rest of the months but this month it will happen. The rooms that I live in day in and day out tend to get really cluttered and messy. That is only 5 rooms (not counting the basement or Matt’s room) that I need to focus on. I want to de-clutter this place. I want to focus on eliminating items that I don’t use or use up items I forget about and buy something similar in place of. I want less things to end up cluttering up my bedroom floor and to be able to breathe easy after a brief clean-up at the end of the day. So, February is de-clutter month in the Parnell household. I am sure you will hear about my victories and failures throughout or at least at the end.

Anyway, off to look for a car!

See ya!

Storage

With a new home comes finding new ways to store the items that you currently have. Under the sink storage is one place that is always a disaster in my house… Until now!

I was getting so frustrated with the mess that would fall out from under my sink every time I would dig to find something. TJ was getting just as frustrated, if not more. But the pipes really get in the way of some solid storage under the sink. You really have to think about it and what would work best with the strange layout of space under there. Well I found something that I love!

Here is the before:

This is kitchen sink. As you can see on the left, there is plenty of upwards storage space that is honestly not being used. What a waste!

The bathroom sink. You can’t see it as well but there is also some great upwards space that is not being used.

I found these little metal shelves at Ikea. It has this cute kind of retro look to the top. They come as two separate shelves and you screw them together. They fit perfectly into the space! There are these wide ones that we put into the kitchen sink storage.

It really utilized all of the available space and made everything have a place. It has made the area much more accessible and organized.

We also found some smaller shelves of the same style that we about half the size of the larger ones. Those ones we put under the bathroom sink.

Made the bathroom sink storage space less of a hazard when opening the cupboard door. So awesome!
I might spray paint them or something at some point. Maybe a prettier color than the white. I don’t know.

Thoughts? What color should I paint the shelves?

See ya!
